Annual Fall Festival

2016 Festival Logo Color Website50th Annual Fall Festival
Friday, September 30, 2016 through Sunday, October 2, 2016

We have reached a milestone in parish history! For 50 years we have gathered the parish family and the neighboring community in a spirit of fun and celebration.  As we honor the Feast of St. Francis we rely on the time, treasure and talent of hundreds of volunteers to create a clean, safe and festive event that features rides, games, food and entertainment.

Note: Parking during the weekend is very limited. In consideration of our neighbors we recommend carpooling, using an app base ride service such as Uber or Lyft or go completely green by walking or biking to the event.

Festival History – 50 Years Ago

Upon hearing that neighboring parish St. Bonaventure held a successful 3 day festival, parishioner Gayle McCrea was inspired to approach pastor Fr. Colman Colloty asking permission for Sts. Simon & Jude to host its own 3-day fundraising event and raffle.  Fr. Colman was not keen on the idea but allowed her to present the idea to the Parish Council and have the Council vote on hosting a 3 day event as a parish wide fundraiser.  The Council liked the idea, they voted yes to Gayle’s proposal and soon, rides and games were ordered.  A local car dealer donated a Ford Thunderbird as grand prize for the raffle. A Marine from the El Toro base won the car.  When the car dealer found out that the winner was married and had 6 kids, he allowed the Marine to trade the Thunderbird in for a station wagon!  After the first festival in 1966 the McCrea’s presented a check to Fr. Colman for $10,000.

Volunteers ~ The size and magnitude of the Festival are impressive but what is truly inspiring is that the Festival is run 100% by volunteers!  Volunteering is a wonderful way to get involved and build relationships with other parishioners.  We encourage all that are able - families, individuals, teens, kids with a parent to sign up for at least one shift in a food or game booth over the weekend.
