First Reconciliation and First Communion Preparation

Welcome to the Sts. Simon & Jude Sacrament preparation program!

The Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion is part of a two year journey, typically beginning when a child enters the first grade. In order to participate in these Sacraments, a child must be Baptized in a Roman Catholic Church prior to the age of 8 years old. The Sacrament of Reconciliation must be completed before the Sacrament of First Holy Communion.

In order to prepare and understand these Sacraments more fully, children in the Sacramental preparation program will be required to be enrolled in faith formation class at SSJ or attend the SSJ Catholic school. Additionally, children will need to attend five meetings outside of the regular faith formation classes at SSJ or SSJ Catholic school. One parent is required to attend and be active participants with their child(ren) at all of these meetings.

In Between Classes:
“Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues.” (CCC 2223)

In between the meetings, children and parents must complete four or five lessons from the Sacramental Preparation program that has been provided to each family. These lessons will include a parent guide to assist in the implementation. These lessons will be discussed at the meeting at the next meeting. They are important in the faith formation of your child and their understanding of the Sacraments they are receiving. There will be a Google Form sent to you before each meeting that will allow you to submit the completed lessons.

As we continue to navigate through the uncertainty of COVID-19, we want to offer faith, flexibility, and safety in our Sacrament preparation. That means more class times and methods of instruction. That also means things will look different than previous years and might have to change along the way if rules and restrictions are lifted or re-imposed. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. More information on the specifics of the Sacraments (i.e. dates and times) will be announced at a later date.
